Where we play
Fota Island Resort, Cork, Ireland. The Fota Island course is located close to Cork City, situated within a 780-acre estate which is included in "The Inventory of Outstanding Landscapes in Ireland". The course is laid out on rolling parkland and framed by mature woodland with stunning views across Cork Harbour. Wide fairways and light rough are features of Fota Island, but don't let this lull you into a false sense of security. The course can be stretched to 6,927 yards and with par set at 71 for men (72 for ladies), it represents a very tough but fair challenge. And, considering its relative youth, it appears mature beyond its tender years. Bunkering is relatively moderate, but water is a significant hazard, so take enough balls just in case your game is not on song.

Luttrellstown Castle, Dublin, Ireland.Luttrellstown Castle Resort is located in a wonderful estate on the outskirts of Dublin. The parkland course is situated within a 560-acre property that has at its centre an ivy-clad, 600-year-old castle. Tom Mackenzie of Donald Steel & Co. redesigned the course in 2006, adding a new short game layout and practice area. What was already a fine set of holes on the main 18-hole circuit have now been refurbished to true championship standard with USGA-standard greens. Set in rolling countryside with several lakes and many stands of mature trees, Luttrellstown Castle is a very pleasant place to play golf. The course is relatively open with bunkers that have been sparingly installed and rough that is never too penal.

Royal Birkdale, Southport, England. The club was simply known as Birkdale until 1951 when King George VI bestowed the royal charter on the club. Royal Birkdale Golf Club has hosted all the important events--the Ryder Cup, Walker Cup, Curtis Cup, Ladies British Open Championship. The British Open Championship has been hosted at Birkdale no fewer than nine times (most recently in 2008 and coming in 2017).
Birkdale has a superfluity of great golf holes. The 12th, a 183-yard par three is a classic hole and as natural as you can get. From a raised tee, the ball must carry across a hollow, whilst avoiding four deep pot bunkers before coming to rest on a narrow, raised green that is nestled at the feet of tussocky sand dunes. |
